Communication Access

Communication Access accommodations provide access to information that is typically being communicated verbally. Generally, these accommodations are for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Assistive Listening Device (FM)

To help the student hear the lecture, an Assistive Listening Device (ALD) may be used. The student will give the instructor a small transmitter and microphone for use during lecture. Just turn on the transmitter, clip it on or put it in a pocket, and pin the mic to a shirt. Turn it off during private conversations that aren’t meant for the class, or when visiting the restroom. Return it to the student at the end of class.

Closed Captioning

All videos shown in this class must have captions turned on. If instructors are unsure how to turn on captions or subtitles, aren’t sure if media is captioned, or have questions, please contact LAP Coordinator of Interpreter and Communication Services at 1-805-922-6966 ext. 3396. Please note that automatic captions by YouTube are not at all adequate and should not be used.  (confirm with Julia that she is the person on campus to contact about this)

American Sign Language (ASL) or Signed English (SEE)

Deaf students who utilize sign may be provided communication access on campus through interpreters. The interpreter will sign what the instructor and the other students say and will voice what the Deaf student signs. Interpreters may be live in class or participate via video.

Real Time Captioning/C-Print/Transcriber

Communication Access Real Time Translation (CART) provides  word for word transcription of the lecture or discussion. It is provided by a CART transcriptionist using computer technology. The transcriptionist may be in class or remote. CART is preferred for some types of classes, such as science and math. Please schedule a meeting with the DHH Coordinator to learn more.

C-Print is provides meaning for meaning communication access. C-Print (Typewell) can also be provided in person or through a remote service.

These services are arranged in advance through LAP. Please direct any questions to the LAP Coordinator of Interpreter and Communication Services at 1-805-922-6966 ext. 3396.
