Nursing Degree Comparision

  • Associate Degree Pathway (2 year nursing program)
    • Complete an associate degree in registered nursing at a community college.
  • Pre-Licensure/Traditional BSN Pathway (2 year nursing program)
    • A non-registered nurse seeking to transfer and earn a BSN degree.
  • ADN/RN to BSN Pathway (3 year nursing program) 
    • A licensed registered nurse seeking to transfer and earn a BSN degree.
  • Accelerated BSN Pathway (1-2 year nursing program)
    • A non-registered nurse with any bachelor's degree seeking a BSN degree.
  • Master Degree Pathway (2-3 year nursing program)
    • A licensed registered nurse with a BSN degree seeking to complete a master's degree. 
    • A non-registered nurse with any bachlor's degree, after completing prerequisites, seeking a master's degree. 

Common Registered Nursing Prerequisites

Always reference admission requirements for each prospective campus.  Use nursing program links below for specific prerequisite requirements.  Keep in mind, some nursing program have science recency requirements.

  • Anatomy- BIOL 124
  • Physiology- BIOL 125
  • Mircrobiology- BIOL 128
  • General or Organic Chemistry- CHEM 150 or CHEM 140
  • Public Speaking- COMM C1000 (formerly COMM 101)
  • English Composition- ENGL C1000 (formerly ENGL 101)
  • Statistics- STAT C1000 (formerly MATH 123)
  • Critical Thinking- ENGL C1001 (formerly ENGL 103) or PHIL 114  
  • General Psychology- PSYC C1000 (formerly PSY 101)
  • Culutral Anthropology or Intro to Sociology- ANTH 102 or SOC 101

Some universities may require other courses, such as:

  • Nutrition- FSN 109 or FSN 110
  • Lifespan Development- PSY 118
  • Ethics- PHIL 105

Common Admission Criteria

  • Overall prerequisite GPA
  • Overall GPA among all colleges attended
  • CSUGE/IGETC/Cal-GETC completion
  • TEAS Score
  • Healthcare experience (CNA, LVN, Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, EMT, Paramedic etc.)
  • Local preference

Counseling Tip: Schedule a Comprehensive Student Education Plan (semester-by-semester plan) with a counselor to ensure all admission requirements are met for each prospective university.
