Latine students continue to be historically excluded in science, technology, engineering
and mathematics (STEM) fields. Various studies have shown that these students have
the same level of interest in STEM careers as their white counterparts. High Impact
Practices (HIP) in STEM, such as peer-led learning, summer undergraduate research,
and faculty mentoring have been implemented in an effort to increase the number of
students retained in STEM disciplines. However, this approach alone does not reduce
attrition in STEM fields. Centering Latine student inclusion and belonging in STEM,
we will apply Dr. Tara Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) framework to student
sense of belonging in STEM. Particularly, we will cover how students’ CCW supports
a student's success in STEM disciplines and strengthens their intrinsic leadership.
