City of Santa Maria Proclaims Aug. 15 "Patty Boyd Day"

AUGUST 15, 2023-- The Santa Maria City Council proclaimed August 15 “Patty Boyd Day” to recognize Patricia “Patty” Rice Boyd’s impact and contributions to the local community.
“Patty Boyd was a lifelong patron of the arts and a consummate piano teacher, whose generosity to Santa Maria continues to benefit many generations,” stated Santa Maria City Manager’s Officer Public Information Manager Mark van de Kamp.
Patricia “Patty” Rice Boyd was born in 1920 as the granddaughter of Florence and W.H. Rice, who were among the early settlers of the Santa Maria Valley. Ms. Boyd attended Santa Maria High School in addition to Santa Maria Junior College. After graduating from San Jose State with a degree in music, she promptly returned to the Santa Maria Valley to teach piano privately and eventually joined the faculty of Allan Hancock College, teaching advanced piano.
In addition to teaching, Ms. Boyd was a loyal supporter of the arts in Santa Maria, serving on the board of the Santa Maria Symphony Society and as a regular patron of PCPA. Upon Ms. Boyd’s passing in 2012, she left Allan Hancock College a donation of $13 million, one of the largest contributions to a California Community College at the time.Allan Hancock College will honor Patty Boyd’s legacy at the inaugural Hancock Honors event Sept. 9 from 5 – 9 p.m. at the Fine Arts Complex on the Santa Maria campus.
