Floral Design

Floral Design Training 

The Floral Design Certificate Program provides hands-on training in floral design principles, arrangement techniques, and industry practices used in retail floral businesses and event design.

Students learn how to create floral arrangements using elements of design such as color, line, texture, shape, and balance while developing practical skills for personal enrichment or employment opportunities.

The program includes the following courses:

  • Beginning Floral Design
  • Floral Design: Beyond the Basics
  • Floral Design: Beyond the Basics II
  • Floral Design: Special Events
  • Floral Seasonal Celebrations

Students receive instruction in:

  • Floral design principles
  • Color theory
  • Arrangement techniques
  • Flower and plant identification
  • Floral care and handling
  • Seasonal floral design
  • Event and wedding floral arrangements
  • Creative design projects

Students create floral arrangements throughout the program and may take completed projects home.

Classes are offered during the spring, summer, and fall terms.

Certificate of Completion

The Floral Design Certificate provides students with foundational and intermediate floral design skills that may be used for personal enrichment or entry-level opportunities in the floral industry.

Required Courses

VOCE 7400B – Beginning Floral Design

Students learn the fundamentals of floral design and arrangement creation.

Topics include:

  • Design principles
  • Color theory
  • Flower and plant identification
  • Floral care and handling
  • Arrangement construction techniques

Students create floral arrangements throughout the course.


VOCE 7401B – Floral Design: Beyond the Basics

Students expand on foundational floral design skills while exploring new techniques and design concepts.

Topics include:

  • Advanced arrangement techniques
  • Design refinement
  • Creative floral projects
  • Color, line, texture, and shape

Students create floral arrangements throughout the course.


VOCE 7402B – Floral Design: Beyond the Basics II

Students further develop floral design skills through more advanced projects and creative applications.

Topics include:

  • Advanced floral design methods
  • Color theory applications
  • Artistic expression
  • Independent design projects

Students create floral arrangements throughout the course.


VOCE 7404B – Floral Design: Special Events

Students learn floral design techniques used for celebrations and special occasions.

Topics include:

  • Event floral design
  • Wedding and party arrangements
  • Corsages and wearable flowers
  • Floral gift items
  • Decorative displays

Students create floral arrangements and event-inspired projects throughout the course.


VOCE 7405B – Floral Seasonal Celebrations

Students create floral projects inspired by seasonal themes and holidays.

Topics include:

  • Seasonal arrangements
  • Centerpieces
  • Decorative floral displays
  • Permanent botanicals
  • Holiday and celebration designs

Students create floral arrangements throughout the course.

Approximately 96 hours

Satisfactory Progress (SP)

Students may use the skills gained in this program to pursue opportunities such as:

  • Floral Design Assistant
  • Floral Shop Employee
  • Event Floral Assistant
  • Wedding and Event Decor Assistant

Or apply floral design skills for personal enrichment and creative projects.

Completion Requirements

To earn the certificate, students must:

  • Successfully complete all required Floral Design courses
  • Complete approximately 96 instructional hours
  • Meet course participation and performance requirements
