Hancock To Host Women's Fire Camp

JULY 1, 2024-- Allan Hancock College is inviting women ages 15-23 to get a first-hand look at life as a firefighter during its inaugural Women’s Fire Camp. The camp will be held on Aug. 3 from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. at the college’s Public Safety Training Complex in Lompoc.
Women who sign up for this event will have the opportunity to work with staff from Hancock’s fire technology program and the college’s state-certified Fire Academy. Several female Hancock College Fire Academy graduates, who are now professional firefighters, will be on hand to share their knowledge and experience. Participants will take part in various team-building exercises and hands-on training with the techniques and equipment used by firefighters.
Activities will include fire-based fitness, ground ladder and aerial ladders, hose handling, search and rescue exercises, rope rescue skill-building, and more. The camp is free, and participants do not need to have any experience in the fire industry to take part.
“Our camp has been designed as a challenging and rewarding opportunity to develop confidence and get an up-close look at the day-to-day life of a firefighter” said AHC Fire Technology Program Coordinator John Ceceña. “We hope our camp will encourage more women to consider entering careers in the fire service, and we are excited to showcase our Fire and EMS programs as the fantastic starting point that they are.”
In addition to the activities, the camp will provide lunch and conclude with a job fair sponsored by local fire departments. Participants will also receive a free T-shirt.
Space is limited, and anyone interested in participating must register to attend by July 26. To learn more and sign up for Hancock’s Women’s Fire Camp, visit https://www.hancockcollege.edu/pathways/public-services/wfc.php.
