Hancock Superintendent/President Inspires OAHS Students

FEBRUARY 6, 2025-- Allan Hancock College Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D., visited Orcutt Academy High School (OAHS) on Feb. 3 to speak with students about leadership, education, and future opportunities at Hancock.
Walther’s talk was part of the “Leadership Unplugged” speaker series organized by Supporting Orcutt Academy’s Academic Resources (SOAAR), a nonprofit foundation dedicated to enhancing academic offerings at OAHS and the Orcutt Academy K-8 campus.
During the event, held in the OAHS gym, Walthers engaged with students in an open and candid discussion, sharing valuable insights gained from his 12-year tenure at Hancock. He highlighted the transformative impact of the Hancock Promise, which provides two years of free tuition to local high school graduates, emphasizing its role in increasing college enrollment and student success.
“We’ve seen enrollment from local feeder high schools jump just because of the Promise program,” said Walthers. “My hope is that every student at Orcutt Academy and other local high schools has the chance to take real college classes to see what college is like. I would like to see students earn at least a semester’s worth of concurrent enrollment credit by the time they graduate.”
Walthers also addressed the advantages of beginning one’s college journey at Hancock, underscoring the institution’s commitment to high-quality education and affordability.
“The quality of education you get in the first two years at Allan Hancock College is every bit as good as what you get at a CSU or UC,” Walthers said. Reflecting on his own experience as a community college transfer student, Walthers encouraged students to consider Hancock as a strong foundation for their academic and career paths.
The event was moderated by SOAAR board member and Cal Poly professor Martin Mehl and concluded with an interactive Q&A session, allowing students to engage directly with Walthers.
“Dr. Walthers’ talk was very informative,” said Mark Steller, president of the SOAAR Foundation board of directors. “Everyone who attended left with a good feeling about where Hancock College is headed, and obviously Dr. Walthers is a big reason for that.”
The Leadership Unplugged series, hosted by SOAAR, invites local leaders to share their experiences in an authentic and engaging format. SOAAR continues to plan future events designed to connect students with influential community figures.
