Ann Foxworthy Gallery Hosts Work of Lucienne Bloch

OCTOBER 7, 2021 -- The Ann Foxworthy Gallery at Allan Hancock College is featuring the works of the late Lucienne Bloch from Oct. 11 through Nov. 24, in an exhibition from her personal archives.
Bloch (1909-1999) was an accomplished artist and a peer and close friend of artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. In the 1930s, her photographs of their working relationship and personal rapport captured the couple’s poignant and intimate moments against the backdrop of the historical and socio-political contexts of the 20th century.
“The exceptional legacy of Lucienne Bloch includes her work as a muralist, sculptor, glass designer, photographer, advocate, political activist, educator and illustrator,” said Gallery Director Laura-Susan Thomas. “Her contributions span over the last century as her multimedia talent crossed cultural boundaries.”
The exhibition at the Foxworthy Gallery features works from Bloch’s personal archives and is co-curated by Thomas and Hancock Fine Arts Professor Jill Thayer, Ph.D.
In addition to the exhibit, the gallery will also host a special in-person discussion with Lucienne Allen, Bloch’s granddaughter, on Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. in the gallery. Allen will share stories about her grandmother’s extensive art career, advocacy and the friendships she forged with Kahlo and Rivera. The event will also be livestreamed online.
The Ann Foxworthy Gallery is located inside the Academic Resource Center, bldg. L on the Santa Maria campus. To learn more about the exhibit and the live event, visit the Foxworthy Gallery webpage at www.hancockcollege.edu/gallery.
