AHC's Community Education Program Offers Free Fall Classes

AUGUST 6, 2020 -- As residents continue to struggle with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy and job market, Allan Hancock College Community Education is offering free fall classes to help community members learn new job skills and find employment.
Starting Aug. 17, AHC Community Education will offer no-cost noncredit classes in workplace preparation and vocational education for job seekers and individuals looking to learn new career skills to advance in their current occupations. These free classes will be offered online in real-time, allowing participants to interact with instructors in a safe and socially distanced manner.
“The COVID pandemic has effected employment in our region,” said Community Education Vocational Education Coordinator Joan Bergstrom Smith. “If you are out of a job, or considering a different job or career, these classes are an opportunity to learn how to research other career opportunities, identify your marketable skills and develop work-related goals.”
Fall Workplace Preparation (WKPR) courses include career planning, job search planning, and impression management. The courses will help participants learn effective job search strategies and how to build an outstanding resume. In addition, they will also hone their job interview skills and make a good impression on perspective employers.
Vocational Education (VOCE) classes can help participants learn how to use digital tools and programs required in many entry and mid-level jobs in today’s economy. Courses include basic computer skills, introduction to the internet, social media, and classes in Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel.
In addition to vocational education and career preparation course, Community Education will also offer free remote fall classes in Basic Skills (BASK) for individuals seeking their GED, HiSET or other high school diploma equivalent, a wide range of noncredit English as a Second Language (NESL) classes and classes for community members seeking U.S. citizenship. Other classes offered by Community Education this fall include oil painting, balance and mobility, and stress management.
