Hancock Supports Students as They Prepare for Spring Classes

JANUARY 13, 2021 -- Allan Hancock College is encouraging local students to enroll in spring classes and take advantage of a wide array of services and support programs designed to help them succeed in the new year.

Spring classes begin on Jan. 19 and there is still time to register. In order to ensure the safety and health of Hancock students, faculty and staff, most spring classes will continue to be held remotely online. The college does offer many student support services and programs online and in-person, designed to help students overcome the challenges posed by online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Many students continue struggling with the impacts of the pandemic on their education, careers and personal lives. We want them to know that Hancock is here to support them in any way we can,” said Hancock Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D. “The services and programs available to students can help them continue their educational journeys and meet their goals of graduating, transferring, starting or re-starting a career.”

While the pandemic created an economic strain on many students and their families, Hancock continues offering affordable tuition and financial aid to students who qualify. In addition, local mid-year high school seniors still qualify for the Hancock Promise, allowing them to attend their first year at AHC free of tuition and fees. Promise students can also qualify to earn a free $100-$200 textbook voucher by completing the steps to enter the program.

All of Hancock’s spring students have access to several important services this spring. Those include the college’s Laptop Loaner program, allowing students to borrow a school laptop for remote online classes at no cost, and the Books for Bulldogs program, allowing students to borrow textbooks for the entire semester. In addition, the college also offers virtual tutoring, library and counseling services, as well as a virtual welcome center where students can chat with Hancock staff live online and get their questions answered by a number of college departments. The college also has many programs to help students struggling to meet their basic needs. Those include public and student-only food share programs for students and families facing food scarcity, a Career Center providing assistance and professional attire for students seeking work, and a student emergency fund providing money for food, housing, transportation and other basic needs.

“We are looking forward to the day when we will be able to have all our students back on campus. But until we are able to do that safely, we will continue to provide these critical services and programs to help our students stay on track and continue their education at Hancock,” said Walthers.
