Frequently Asked Questions:
Tutors start at $18 per hour, with the chance to earn up to $19 per hour by getting a $0.50 raise each semester. If you're embedded in one 3–4 unit course, you’ll usually work around 8–10 hours a week. Courses with a lab component typically mean more hours, usually 12–14 per week. Scheduling is often worked out between you and the faculty member you’re supporting. If you’re an experienced tutor embedded in multiple courses, you could work up to the maximum 20 hours per week.
Yes. We don't expect our tutors to be experts, and we welcome students from all backgrounds and experiences. Before the semester begins, all tutors attend a training session to help build the skills and confidence needed to support students. There are also optional training opportunities throughout the semester so you can keep growing and developing your tutoring strategies.
Depending on the course content and needs of the students, the faculty member you are supporting will have a vision for how you will engage with the course. Some instructors would like their tutors to attend all class sessions, while others would prefer strategic class visits with more outside of class support. While each experience will vary, there are limits to what an embedded tutor can and cannot do:
Embedded Tutors CAN…
- Hold extra student support hours if/when an instructor cancels class during the time in which the class would meet
- Provide insightful feedback on course materials, exams, and assignments to help the instructor improve
- Use supplementary course materials during student support hours
- Hold (pre-approved) extra student support hours when a major assignment is due or before an exam
- Remind and encourage students to go to the instructor if/when additional help is needed or students have questions about their grades or course progress.
Embedded Tutors CANNOT…
- Run class (if the instructor is absent)
- Take attendance during class
- Create or proctor exams
- Design course materials
- Grade assignments or predict a student's grade on one
- Plan/prepare lessons to be taught during class
- Discipline other students
- Be asked to manage disruptive students or the "classroom climate."
Absolutely! There are multiple tutoring centers around campus, with opportunities to work as a tutor across various course subjects. Visit Tutorial Services to find your preferred center and follow their steps to apply. If you are interested in tutoring for the Academic Resource Center, apply here.
Yes, you can hold more than one on-campus job at the same time. However, you're limited to working a maximum of 20 hours per week total across all your campus positions.
