Allan Hancock College Community Education offers tuition-free, noncredit Home Economics courses that help students build practical skills for everyday life. Courses may include cooking and sewing in a supportive, hands-on learning environment. These classes are designed to be flexible, accessible, and useful for personal growth and lifelong learning.

Build your sewing skills through a structured, hands-on certificate program designed for beginners through intermediate learners.

Required Courses

SEWN 7200 – Sewing Fundamentals 1
Learn the basics of sewing using domestic sewing machines in a supportive, hands-on environment. This course introduces new and beginning sewers to essential skills, including machine setup, stitching techniques, seam finishes, and simple garment or craft construction. Students also gain introductory experience with overlock machines. 

SEWN 7201 – Sewing Fundamentals 2
Expand your sewing skills while exploring more challenging projects using domestic sewing and overlock machines. This intermediate-level course focuses on garment construction, pattern reading, fabric selection, and finishing techniques. 

SEWN 7203 – Sewing Open Lab
A flexible, self-paced sewing lab for students who wish to continue practicing and refining their skills. Participants bring their own sewing or craft projects and receive guidance, demonstrations, and technical support from the instructor. Domestic sewing and overlock machines are provided. This course offers extended opportunities for skill development, independent project completion, and increased confidence in creative sewing applications.
