Hancock Offers Promise Workshops for Local Students, Parents

APRIL 22, 2020--As local high school seniors prepare to graduate amid the “new normal” of the COVID-19 outbreak, Allan Hancock College continues to commit to its promise to offer them their first year fee-free. The college is hosting a week of virtual workshops to help students obtain their first year at AHC free of tuition and fees through the Hancock Promise.

The college will host multiple online Promise workshops for high school students and their parents beginning Monday, April 27, and continuing through May 1. Parent workshops are available in both English and Spanish. Additional workshop details are available at www.hancockcollege.edu/promise.

“We know that life for these students has changed dramatically, and that they may feel uncertain about what will happen to them after they graduate high school. We want them to know that they have the opportunity to come to Hancock tuition-free for their first year and stay on track to achieve their college and career goals,” said Hancock Associate Superintendent/Vice President of Student Services Nohemy Ornelas, Ed.D

Promise workshops for parents and guardians will be held on Monday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 28. On both days, the English-language workshops start at 6 p.m.; the Spanish-language workshops start at 7:15 p.m. The workshops will include information about the benefits of the Promise and how parents can help their high school senior become a Hancock Promise student.

Hancock will close out the week by hosting online “Launch to College” workshops for Promise-eligible high school students on April 29, April 30 and May 1 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. During these orientation-style workshops, students will learn more about the support and services the college offers and receive assistance completing the final steps required to obtain the Hancock Promise.

The Hancock Promise provides local high school graduates with a year of free tuition at Hancock. The Promise is open to all students who enroll at Hancock immediately following graduation from a high school located in the Allan Hancock Joint Community College District. Students who are home schooled or completed their GED through a local adult education program within the district (GED and HiSET graduates) are also eligible. The Promise provides these students with more than $1,200 in tuition and fees during their first year Hancock, personalized counseling for academic success, free tutoring, and other academic support services. Hancock Promise students will also receive priority registration for summer and fall classes on May 6.

The Hancock Promise is funded in-part by an endowment through the Allan Hancock College Foundation. To learn more about supporting the Hancock Promise, visit www.hancockcollege.edu/foundation.
