Foxworthy Gallery Displays Work of Central Coast Printmakers
Aug. 17, 2023-- Allan Hancock College’s Ann Foxworthy Gallery is exhibiting a beautiful collection of artworks created by artists from the Santa Barbara Printmakers Group as part of its latest show.
The exhibit, titled Resonance, explores a variety of printmaking styles and techniques and will be on display at the gallery from Aug. 17 through Sept. 28.
The prints featured in the exhibition were created using both ancient and contemporary printmaking techniques, including but not limited to hand-printing and press-printing. Works also include woodcuts, linoleum block prints, silkscreen prints, and combinations of various other techniques.
“Regardless of which technique is used, the most magical aspect of printmaking is the moment when the print is slowly lifted from the inked surface and turned over,” said Foxworthy Gallery Director Laura-Susan Thomas. “Each print becomes its own piece of original art. No two prints are the same.”
The subject matter of the prints in this exhibition ranges from curled-up coyotes to brilliant monarch butterflies, to vertiginous cityscapes and beyond.
The Santa Barbara Printmakers evolved from the Monotype Guild, founded in 1989. This small group of artists produced one-of-a-kind, hand-pulled prints. The group evolved into a larger membership organization representing artists from the California Central Coast region. The group is dedicated to creating and promoting all types of printmaking for artistic exploration and expression.
The gallery is hosting a reception for the exhibit on Sept. 7 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public and free.
The Ann Foxworthy Gallery is located inside the Academic Resource Center, bldg. L on Hancock’s Santa Maria campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Wednesday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
