Foxworthy Gallery Features AHC Alumni in New Exhibit

Painting titled Wimpy’s Machado by Ruben Espinoza. The artwork depicts a small liquor store with a brown roof and orange walls, labeled 'Wimpy’s Liquors' on a blue storefront sign. A large red roadside sign with the same wording stands in the foreground to the right. The scene includes parking spaces, power lines overhead, and a Coca-Cola advertisement painted on the wall in the background.

AUGUST 19, 2025-- Allan Hancock College’s Ann Foxworthy Gallery is shining a spotlight on two of Santa Maria’s own artistic talents in its current exhibition, Made in Santa Maria. The show features the works of artists Ruben Espinoza and Aaron Cribbs and will run through Oct. 2.

Made in Santa Maria highlights the creativity, development and professional accomplishments of two artists who began their journeys in Hancock’s fine arts and design programs.

“Both Espinoza and Cribbs have gone on to achieve successful careers in the arts,” said Gallery Co-Coordinator Elizabeth Russell. “Their careers range from animation and illustration to large-scale murals and hand-painted signage, while they continue to remain connected to their hometown community.”

Cribbs, a Hancock graduate and skilled sign painter, pinstriper and muralist, has nearly 20 years of experience creating bespoke signage, murals and hand-painted designs for clients throughout the Central Coast and beyond. His craftsmanship can be seen everywhere from Santa Barbara Harbor to Paso Robles, including the Santa Maria Civic Center and Hancock’s own Centennial Vessel.

Espinoza, a Hancock alum and graduate of Cal State Fullerton, has spent over 15 years working in the animation industry with studios such as Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., DreamWorks and Disney TV Animation. Outside of animation, he brings vibrant public art to life through murals inspired by his Latino roots and Mexican heritage, beautifying neighborhoods across the Central Coast.

The gallery will host an opening reception for the show on Aug. 28 from 4:30- 7 p.m. The gallery will also host an artist’s talk with Espinoza and Cribbs on Sept. 12 from 6-7 p.m. in Boyd Concert Hall (bldg. F) on the Santa Maria campus.

Both the exhibition and its related events are free and open to the public.

The Ann Foxworthy Gallery is located inside the Academic Resource Center (bldg. L-South) on Hancock’s Santa Maria campus, 800 S. College Drive. Gallery hours are Monday–Wednesday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Thursday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
