'Lucha Libro' Comes to Hancock
SEPTEMBER 4, 2026- Allan Hancock College is getting ready to rumble as professional wrestlers trade the squared circle for the library during a free “Lucha Libro” performance open to the community Sept. 23 at 6 p.m.
Part live professional wrestling match, part literacy event, Lucha Libro brings the colorful characters and high-energy action of professional wrestling into an unexpected setting: the library.
“When we learned about a wrestling group that ties a love of reading and storytelling with live-action wrestling, we knew we wanted to invite them to Hancock,” said AHC Librarian Sharaya Olmeda. “We felt that bringing this event to our students and community would be a memorable way to enshrine the library as a place that empowers people through literacy and education while affirming cultural identity and belonging.”
The concept has gained national attention as Lucha Libro wrestlers have performed at libraries throughout California and across the country. Founded in 2024, Lucha Libro combines professional wrestling with reading and storytelling to promote literacy and introduces audiences to libraries in a completely different way. More than 40 Lucha Libro events are planned at libraries from California to New Jersey this year.
Previous performances have included wrestlers reading children's books in the ring before being interrupted by their opponents, followed by full professional wrestling matches complete with entrances, costumes, body slams, and high-flying moves.
“We want to invite and encourage students and the community to read, learn, and open their minds to things they never thought possible, like live library-themed lucha wrestling,” Olmeda said.
Hancock will host two Lucha Libro performances on Sept. 23, beginning with a 12:30 p.m. show for students. The main event begins at 6 p.m. and is open to the entire community. Admission is free, and attendees will have the opportunity to experience the action from ringside seats.
The performances will take place on the Commons at Hancock's Santa Maria campus at 800 S. College Drive.
The evening performance is free and open to the public. No wrestling mask required.
