Hancock Superintendent/President to Speak at OAHS
JANUARY 30, 2025-- Allan Hancock College Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D., will be the featured speaker at “Leadership Unplugged”, a special community event taking place on Monday, Feb. 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Orcutt Academy High School (OAHS) Gym.
Organized by the Supporting Orcutt Academy’s Academic Resources (SOAAR) Foundation, “Leadership Unplugged” will feature an open and candid discussion with Walthers about leadership, education, and the challenges facing community colleges today.
During his talk, Walthers will also highlight Hancock’s work to provide two years of free tuition to local high school graduates through the Hancock Promise initiative and the college’s ongoing efforts to expand access to bachelor’s degrees.
“Leadership is about creating opportunities and removing barriers. At Hancock, we’re committed to ensuring every student has access to an affordable, high-quality education,” said Walthers. “I look forward to discussing how we can continue to empower our students and the next generation of leaders in our community.”
The event, which will be facilitated and co-hosted by Cal Poly professor and SOAAR board member Martin Mehl, the event is free and open to the public and will include a Q&A session.
“Dr. Walthers is an educational leader who truly has changed the odds for local students, and it will be an honor to have him address the Orcutt Academy school community,” says SOAAR board member and Orcutt Union School District (OUSD) Assistant Superintendent Joe Dana. “He and Hancock have been indispensable partners in delivering early college options and career pathways to our students.”
SOAAR is a nonprofit foundation that supports academic offerings at OAHS and the Orcutt Academy K-8 campus. SOAAR also offers and coordinates scholarships for students graduating from OAHS. The organization’s “Leadership Unplugged” speaking series invites local leaders and innovators to speak about their experiences as leaders in an authentic and unfiltered setting.
