AHC Students to Compete in National Skills USA Competition
JUNE 7, 2021 -- Twenty talented Allan Hancock College students will compete in the national SkillsUSA competition next week, after a strong individual and team showing at the organization’s statewide competition in April.
“All of our students are extremely excited to compete at a national level against the nation’s top students in the different career and technical education categories,” said Hancock SkillsUSA Advisor Adelina Pozos. “We are confident and optimistic that these talented students will do great.”
Hancock’s SkillsUSA team took home 15 gold medals, five silver medals, and one bronze medal during the statewide competition. They earned gold medals in a variety of categories, including automotive refinishing technology, crime scene investigation, entrepreneurship, welding and others.
Students on the team prepared for the competition during their time in class, skills labs, and guided practice with the AHC administrators, staff, faculty, and local industry partners that served as their advisors.
Though the transition to remote learning made it difficult for some, Pozos said the SkillsUSA students gained tremendous self-confidence and credited the program’s Career Essentials Framework with improving their future employability.
“They improved their career essentials skills that are so important to be desirable as an employee,” she added.
Like the regional and statewide competitions, this year’s national contest will be held virtually from June 14 to 18. Pozos looks forward to watching the team compete against their peers from around the country, and “take on any challenges that come their way.”
