Become a Radiologic Technologist
Radiologic Technology (Radiography/X-ray) uses medical imaging to visualize bones, organs, and soft tissues for diagnosis and treatment. Radiologic Technologists combine technical expertise with patient care to produce high-quality digital images.
Allan Hancock College’s (AHC) Pre-Radiography Certificate, offered with Santa Barbara City College (SBCC), provides the prerequisite coursework needed to apply to SBCC’s JRCERT-accredited Associate of Science in Radiography program.
What You’ll Gain
- Foundation in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
- Eligibility* to apply for SBCC’s radiography program
- A clear pathway toward a career in medical imaging
Career Opportunities
- Radiologic technologists in hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers
- Advanced options with further training: MRI, CT, ultrasound**, research, and management
*Admission to SBCC is required and not guaranteed.
**Additional certification may be needed.
The listed prerequisites for the 2025-26 SBCC Radiography program are as follows:
- Anatomy with laboratory - Biol 124 Human Anatomy with Lab
- Physiology with laboratory - Biol 125 Human Physiology with Lab
- Medical Terminology - Hit 135 – Medical Terminology
- RT 100 Radiography and Health Care (must be taken at either SBCC or AHC)
Prerequisites must be completed before applying for the program. No in-progress prerequisites will be accepted.
Important Notice: You may apply to SBCC’s Radiography (RT) program once prerequisites are completed; however, you must finish general education requirements to earn the Associate in Science degree and qualify for the national certification exam. For the best path to licensure, complete all general education courses before beginning the 2-year RT program.
What are the benefits of this partnership?
-
AHC offers RT 100 (a required SBCC prerequisite) and RT 101 on campus, giving local students easier access to a high-demand course needed for Radiography program admission.
-
The partnership may allow clinical placements closer to home in northern Santa Barbara County or southern San Luis Obispo County, depending on availability.
Students are coming in at different points of this educational journey, so it is hard to give an all-inclusive blanket type of advice. You must do the following:
- Make an appointment with an Allan Hancock College Counselor to discuss where you are on your educational journey and the completion of prerequisites and general education towards the RT program. Complete a comprehensive educational Plan (CSEP) with the counselor.
- If you have external transcripts (if you have taken college courses at another college or university), you must submit official transcripts to AHC. These transcripts must be received and evaluated before meeting with a counselor.
- Visit Santa Barbara City College’s website and read about the program and requirements. Santa Barbara City College website link: https://www.sbcc.edu/medicalimaging/
Allan Hancock College (AHC) does not offer a Radiography program on our campus. Thus, the application process is not through Allan Hancock College it is through Santa Barbara City College (SBCC).
The 2025–2026 application window is December 15–19. Apply for Fall admission to SBCC in September or October to ensure you have access to the SBCC student portal, which is required to complete the Radiography program application.

SBCC’s Radiography program is a full-time, intensive 2-year commitment with limited flexibility to complete the remaining general education courses. We strongly recommend finishing all general education requirements before applying. SBCC reinforces this guidance on its website.
