Single-Parent Hancock Students Receive Free Thanksgiving Meals at Annual CARE Turkey Fest

The turkey drive helped 55 single-parent families this year

CARE Turkey DriveNOVEMBER 27, 2019--For the eleventh year in a row, Allan Hancock College’s CARE program provided students who are single parents with a turkey and other Thanksgiving meal items free of charge.

Fifty-five students stopped by CARE’s “Turkey Fest” booth outside the college’s Santa Maria campus on Nov. 26, where CARE staff provided them with everything they would need to prepare a delicious Thanksgiving meal. The packages included a turkey, potatoes, beans, cranberry sauce, rolls, stuffing, pumpkin pie, whipped cream and butter. The packages also included directions on how to prepare and cook the turkey.

“This is going to help me out a lot this year,” said Hancock student Francisco Carriedo, who picked up his turkey before heading to class. “Things get busy, and it can be expensive and hard to organize everything for Thanksgiving. This is really going to make a difference.”

The Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) program is a state-funded program for single parents attending Hancock. The program provides support services such as tutoring, academic counseling, computer access, and a play area for the student’s children.

“With this turkey drive, we wanted to help relieve some of the stress of having to go out purchase all the food items for a big, traditional Thanksgiving dinner,” said CARE Coordinator Alex Spiess. “The students love it, and they like to come back after Thanksgiving and tell us how their cooking went.”

Funds to purchase the turkeys and other food items were donated by Hancock staff, faculty, administrators and members of the college’s Board of Trustees.

“It’s a testament to how generous the Hancock community is, and the students are very appreciative,” said Spiess.
