Hancock Set to Celebrate Mexico's Cultural Heritage with Folklórico Performance

The show runs May 1-4 in the Severson Theatre

FolkloricoMAY 1, 2019--Folklórico!, the annual production sponsored by Allan Hancock College’s dance program, runs May 1-4 in the Severson Theatre on the Santa Maria campus. Dance program coordinator Dianne Grieco McMahon will direct a cast of 125 dancers and singers who will showcase Mexico’s lively, colorful, festive and diverse culture. Twenty-one dances will be performed, representing various regions of Mexico, Spain and Venezuela, each distinguished by its own unique story, costume, music and flavor of the region.

The college’s adult and youth Folklórico programs, along with guest company Ballet Folklórico de Corazon de la Costa will round out this exciting evening of music and dance. Their mission is to enrich the lives of children by providing learning opportunities and instilling a passion and love for Mexico by way of music and dance and, in this way, share its beauty with the world by way of performing arts. The Santa Maria-based group was founded in 2018 and is directed by Marivel Lopez-Lozano. Ms. Lopez-Lozano will be seen performing in three dances.

Lozano holds the conviction that attention to the holistic development of a child, of which the creative element is essential, ultimately leads to a healthier society and culture.

This year’s production will include choreographers Luis Lopez, Horacio Heredia, Marlene Rodriguez-Vega, Johnny Flores, Marivel Lopez-Lozano, Christopher Cortez, Jesus Solorio, Jackie Lopez and retired Santa Maria High school folklorico director Artxezin Amezcua. Local celebrity Joanna Contreras will perform and sing three Mariachi favorites.

The show runs Wednesday, May 1 through Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $12 each and are available at the Performing Arts Center Box Office at the college’s Santa Maria campus. Children ages five and older are welcome to attend. Box office hours are 12:30-7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and Sunday 12:30-5 p.m. For more information call 1-805-922-6966 ext. 3845.
