Hancock Board of Trustees Welcomes New Student Trustee

Student Trustee Heidi Mendiola says she hopes to make a difference on campus and in the community

Heidi MendiolaThe Allan Hancock College Board of Trustees proudly welcomed Heidi Mendiola as its newest student trustee. Mendiola was formally sworn in by Hancock Associate Superintendent/Vice President of Academic Affairs Robert Curry, Ph.D., during the board’s regular meeting on June 11.

Mendiola was raised in Santa Maria and comes from a family of six. She began her journey at Hancock after graduating from Ernest Righetti High School in 2017. She is currently studying sociology and plans to transfer to a four-year university to study criminal justice after she graduates from Hancock. Prior to being elected as a student trustee, Mendiola served as the executive director of the college’s Associated Student Body Government Board.

“When I first came to Hancock, I saw that students could really have an impact on what happens on campus,” said Mendiola. “That’s what made me want to get involved in student government.”

Mendiola said she was inspired to run for student trustee by former Hancock student trustee Yesenia Beas, who held the position in 2017.

“I really wanted to make a difference both on campus and in my community,” said Mendiola.

As a student trustee, Mendiola said her goals included improving the college experience for students, encouraging and increasing student involvement and making positive changes on both the Santa Maria and Lompoc campuses.

“I really want to make an effort to make sure that every student’s voice is being heard,” said Mendiola.

The student trustee is a non-voting position, but attends all board meetings and is recognized as a full member of the board. Student trustees are entitled to participate in discussions and receive all materials presented to trustees, with the exception of items and materials presented in closed session. The term for each student trustee is one year.

Mendiola replaces Inri Serrano, who served a one-year term as student trustee and graduated from Hancock on May 24, 2019.
