Hancock Awarded $200,000 Grant to Support Student Veterans

The college's Veteran Success Center opened in 2015

OCTOBER 1, 2018--The Allan Hancock College Veteran Success Center will be the recipient of nearly $200,000 in grant money through the California Community Colleges Board of Governors. The college was one of 29 community colleges in the state to receive a total of $4.9 million in funding for veterans centers.

“Our plan for this money is to put it straight in the hands of our student veterans in the form of books, food and school supplies,” said Hancock’s Dean of Student Services, Yvonne Teniente-Cuello. “When we wrote this grant that was our intention, so we’re thrilled that we can help our veterans in this way.”

The grant funding was awarded through a competitive process among the 90 California community college campuses that have veteran centers on campus. According to Teniente-Cuello, winning the grant was a team effort of multiple departments on the Hancock campus including Institutional Effectiveness, Grants, and the Veteran Success Center.

“The college is always ready to support our veterans, even if it means all hands on deck staying late hours trying to secure more resources,” Teniente-Cuello said.

Hancock’s Veteran Success Center opened in 2015 and has since been dedicated to providing veterans and active duty service members with the tools and support they may need for academic success and support as they transition from a military environment to an academic setting. These resources include mental health counseling, computer access and access to tutoring and health services.
“Making a deeper investment in our system’s Veterans Resource Centers runs hand-in-hand with our Vision for Success,” California Community College Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley said. “The boost in these resources will certainly contribute to the overall success of our student veterans.”
California is home to an estimated 1.8 million veterans, and annually California community colleges enroll approximately 80,000 veterans and active duty service members.
