Certified Nursing Assistant Employment
CNAs are ranked in the top 5 careers for projected job growth and availability. The need for CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) is projected to continue to grow through the next 20 years due to the aging of the population. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the median annual wages for nursing aides, orderlies and attendants was $23,850 in May of 2008.
Licensed Vocational Nursing Employment
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of LVNs is expected to grow by 21 percent between 2008 and 2018. This is a much faster growth rate than the average for all other occupations due to the long-term care needs of an increasing elderly population and the general increase in demand for healthcare services.
The median annual wage for LVNs in Santa Barbara County was $48,379 or $23.26 per hour in 2009. Jobs are plentiful and may be found in acute hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians’ offices, home health care and clinics.
Registered Nursing Employment
An entry-level wage is approximately $28-33 per hour or around $62,450 annually, with veteran nurses earning $30 per hour and up. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is expected to grow by 22 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for other occupations.
Jobs are plentiful in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, research study programs, and more. Specialties include obstetrics, surgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, intensive care, and emergency room/trauma, among others.
