About the DEI Taskforce

The Board of Trustees of Allan Hancock Joint Community College District supports the intent set forth by the California Legislature to assure that effort is made to build a community in which employment opportunity is equalized, and community colleges foster a climate of acceptance, with the inclusion of faculty and staff from a wide variety of backgrounds.

With the goal of ensuring the equal educational opportunity of all students, the Board of Trustees embrace diversity among students, faculty, staff and the communities we serve as an integral part of our history, a recognition of the complexity of our present state, and a call to action for a better future. Embracing diversity means that we must intentionally practice acceptance and respect towards one another and understand that discrimination and prejudices create and sustain privileges for some while creating and sustaining disadvantages for others. In order to embrace diversity, we also acknowledge that institutional discrimination and implicit bias exist and that our goal is to eradicate those vestiges from our district. Our commitment to diversity requires that we strive to eliminate those barriers to equity and that we act deliberately to create a safe and inclusive environment where individual and group differences are valued and leveraged for our growth and understanding as an educational community.

Diversity

Diversity is the range of human differences and identities, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, perspectives, and political beliefs (including all intersectionalities).

Equity

Equity is the promotion of justice, individualized treatment, and fairness needed for all individuals to achieve individual and communal success

Inclusion

Inclusion is the policy and intentional practice by which barriers are removed so that all individuals may be fully involved and empowered to participate meaningfully in all aspects of the college.
