2020 Commencement Ceremony 

Allan Hancock College is happy to announce that the college will host an in-person graduation ceremony on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

This unique graduation program will feature a combination of in-person, on-stage, and live-streamed events for the ceremony. Students will be able to walk across the stage to receive their diploma and take an official photograph. Hancock will hold this ceremony at multiple times during the day and enforce strict social distancing guidelines to ensure the health and safety of all graduates and their families.

Following a two-week precautionary closure, the Orfalea Children’s Center and Lab School will resume operations on July 6, 2020.

 At this time, the COVID-19 exposure risk remains an isolated incident that did not result in transmission to staff or children in the center.

 The health and safety of our employees, as well as the families we serve, is our highest priority. The Center continues to meet and exceed sanitization guidelines established by the CDC and Community Care Licensing, and will continue to strictly enforce safety protocols for staff and families entering the center. These protocols include ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), temperature checks, and scheduled cleaning throughout the day.

A message from Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D.

The following message was sent to all Hancock faculty, staff, and administration:

On the afternoon of Friday, June 19, the Orfalea Childcare Center Lab School on the Santa Maria campus closed as the result of a staff member reporting a positive COVID-19 test result. It is confirmed that the exposure occurred offsite. The center will remain closed for at least 14 days while the facility undergoes extensive sanitation.

The center was serving 30 children of essential workers in our community. Approximately 10 staff have been identified as having contact with the infected employee. All childcare center staff and families have been notified. All potentially exposed employees may self-quarantine for at least two weeks and are recommended to be tested if symptomatic.

The health and safety of our employees is of utmost priority. All CDC guidelines have been followed and will continue to be followed, including masks being worn by all employees, social distancing practices in place, temperatures taken of all who entered the facility, and frequent facility sanitation.

2020 Commencement Ceremony Update

You spoke, and we listened.

Several weeks ago, AHC administration held an open forum with students to get their input about holding a commencement ceremony, given the college's current limitations on social gatherings due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The students were loud and clear: a virtual celebration has limited appeal, and receiving a diploma in person is important to students, their family, and their community. So the challenge for Hancock is to create an experience that honors student's wishes while keeping everyone safe.

This cannot happen in person in the foreseeable future, so Hancock is postponing commencement until a later date so the college can explore ways to celebrate safely in person. We hope this can happen in August before the next school year begins. We are watching what other colleges are doing nationwide for ideas that we can adapt here at Hancock. Details will follow once we have a clear picture of when it is safe to gather again.

In the meantime, the college is encouraging students to find creative ways to celebrate their graduation in ways that are safe, celebratory, and meaningful. Caps and gowns will be available at the college bookstore soon. Hancock encourages graduates to post pictures online, tag the college, and use the hashtag #AHCGrad2020.

Hancock thanks all the students who provided input into this process and the elected student representatives in ASBG who provided leadership throughout this important discussion. Hancock will continue to work to find a way to effectively celebrate this major milestone for our 2020 graduates in person.

Important Information About Fall Classes

In order to continue offering students a quality college education in a safe and healthy environment, a diverse coalition of administrators, faculty, staff and student representatives is recommending that Allan Hancock College continue to offer the majority of its classes remotely in the fall.

The recommendations are part of a phased approach that will allow the college to incrementally reopen college sites for in-person classes as conditions allow. The college’s primary governance body, College Council, will consider the recommendations May 18. Action taken by College Council will be forwarded to the college’s Academic Senate on May 19 and to Hancock’s Board of Trustees on June 9.

Similar to its summer class offerings, the recommended plan is to offer the vast majority of the college’s credit, noncredit and fee-based classes remotely for fall. Classes that cannot be offered remotely, such as some chemistry and biology lab classes, certain career and technical education classes and the college’s Public Safety Training Complex programs, would remain in-person but follow rigorous social distancing and sanitization protocols.

Remote fall classes are part of the college’s long-range, multi-phased plan that will allow Hancock to gradually return to in-person classes based on guidance from the State of California, the Centers for Disease Control, the California Community College Chancellor’s Office and the Santa Barbara County Health Department.

General registration for summer and fall is ongoing. Summer classes start June 15, and fall classes start Aug. 17. Register for classes at www.hancockcollege.edu/summerfall.

A message to those planning to register for summer/fall.

Class Search for summer and fall classes opens on Monday, April 20. Many spring classes that were planned as face-to-face have transitioned to remote formats due to the Coronavirus outbreak.  

Most summer classes will also be offered remotely. 

When using Class Search, you will now see a new class location designation REMOTE ERT for many summer classes. The Remote ERT (Emergency Remote Teaching) designation identifies summer classes that are transitioning from being scheduled on-campus to being taught remotely. 

Registration for classes begins May 4. Please note that once you register for an ERT course, you will NOT have access to your remote courses until the first day of the course and after the instructor publishes their course in Canvas. For this reason, students should be checking your AHC email for messages from their instructor.

Grading Options For Students

Hancock is committed to supporting students this spring! The college is encouraging students to stay in their classes. However, we acknowledge that this may not be a reality for everyone.

Pass/No Pass

In an effort to support completion of the spring semester and not create additional stress over grade point average for our students, the Pass/No Pass Option for the spring semester is now available this semester until May 20. Students may utilize the grade of “P” to satisfy most degrees and certificates and for courses that usually do not have this option. This option does not affect a student's grade point average.

Students must submit a Pass/No Pass Form https://tinyurl.com/v8fjvsq to the Admissions and Records office via email to: admissions_help@hancockcollege.edu from your myHancock email account.

If students planning to transfer and wondering how P/NP grades will affect them, please note that the California State University (CSU) announced that all 23 campuses will accept P/NP grades for general education as well as lower division major courses taken in spring and/or summer. The University of California (UC) system will also accept all general education completed in spring/summer on a P/NP basis. For any questions or to discuss decisions regarding UC major preparation courses, please consult with a counselor.

 Excused Withdrawals

For spring 2020, all student drops that occur after March 13 will automatically result in an Excused Withdrawal due to Extraordinary Circumstances. When logging into the portal to drop a course, the only option available is now the "Extraordinary Circumstance" drop. If students drop during this time period, they will receive the grade of EW (excused withdrawal) on their transcripts. In addition, any fees paid for the course will be refunded. 

The grade of EW does not count in units attempted, nor is it calculated in the grade point average. Students who receive the grade of EW are eligible to repeat the course in future semesters.  It does not fulfill a prerequisite for any course.

Laptop Loaner Program

If you need to borrow a laptop for the spring semester, please complete this form: https://tinyurl.com/AHCTechCheck. You must complete this form to receive a laptop. Once you have completed the form, please pick up a laptop during one of the following times:

A message to our students regarding upcoming Zoom training meetings.

As of March 30, Hancock's classes will transition to a remote format. What does “remotely” mean? This means Hancock's lecture classes will not meet in one room, nor will the instructor be face-to-face with any student. Therefore, the delivery of the courses can be in any number of ways – such as online, Zoom, teleconference, or group chat. The college is looking into virtual labs to continue instruction for career education and STEM students.

Change can be difficult, and we understand that.

Your faculty are currently hard at work getting their courses ready for this major transition. Now, we want to get you ready.

Later this week, we will hold multiple live Zoom online meetings where you will learn about the many new methods in which your education here at Hancock will continue. Our goal is to help you feel as supported as possible as we move forward together.

The eight Zoom meetings are free to attend, and three sessions will be offered in Spanish. Deaf students are encouraged to email college interpreter Julia Townsend at jtownsend@hancockcollege.edu to request an interpreter be present during a specific Zoom meeting.

Allan Hancock College is moving to all-remote operations and instruction, effective Monday, March 23. No students, faculty, or staff should come to any college sites, unless otherwise notified by a college administrator. 

On Monday, March 23, at 9:00 a.m., Dr. Walthers will host a live Q&A on YouTube for faculty and staff. Faculty and staff should check their myHancock email addresses for information regarding how they can tune in to this mandatory information session.

On Thursday, March 19, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order to shelter at home for the entire state of California.  The governor’s order recognized the need for critical infrastructure, including institutions of higher education, to continue to operate. Institutions of higher education are defined by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency as a part of the Government Facilities Sector.

To support the safety of our students, faculty and staff, Allan Hancock College will immediately provide instruction and student services remotely to the greatest extent possible. Essential functions are those functions that ensure business continuity. Essential functions will be delivered remotely unless determined to require on site personnel (e.g., campus safety).

On Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., Superintendent/President Kevin Walthers will deliver a live address via YouTube to the campus community, followed by a question and answer period. A link will be provided via email for members of the campus community.

Message from the Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D.:

Today, the college met with leadership from all of our constituency groups via Zoom. Allan Hancock College has been put in a difficult position that requires us to meet the needs of our state’s most vulnerable students during a crisis that impacts the ability of our staff to personally interact. As the rapidly changing situation requires Hancock to continuously reassess our efforts to slow the spread of the virus while serving our students, we are putting the safety of our students, faculty, and staff as a top priority.

In light of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent State mandate to shelter at home, the college’s administrative team is working with constituent leaders to assess how this will affect the way we continue to serve our students. Meetings are taking place around the clock to determine the best steps forward.

The governor’s executive order to shelter-at-home made an exception for a number of essential entities, including institutions of higher education. Therefore, we do not plan to cease operations; quite the contrary, we are seeking ways to continue to work toward our mission while ensuring the health and safety of students and staff alike. Hancock is a community college, and we will continue our work serving the community.

Here’s the plan:

  • Classes will be offered mostly online beginning March 30.
  • Faculty are invited to be trained in distance learning next week remotely or in on-site sessions if they prefer (while practicing social distancing).
  • We are still awaiting guidance from the Chancellor’s Office about classes, labs, and on-site trainings that are not easily transferred to online formats. We recognize that we need to limit face-to-face classes, but we also recognize that we are the primary Central Coast provider of public safety professionals and nurses.
  • Students should not come to campus over their second week of spring break.

More decisions will be made in the hours and days ahead.

Hancock Declares State of Emergency, Extends Spring Break an Extra Week

In response to the evolving situation related to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Allan Hancock College has declared a campuswide state of emergency and is extending its Spring Break for an extra week. No college courses (in-person or online) will be held until March 30. That includes the college’s credit and noncredit eight-week spring online classes.

Alternate method formats for in-person courses are being developed. Those include: online classes when possible; modifying lab-oriented Career Technical Education (CTE), and other in-person courses by limiting class sizes; social distancing and other safety protocols in line with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (SBCPHD).

Statement from the college:

"Allan Hancock College is aware that the first positive case of a COVID-19 infection has been confirmed in Northern Santa Barbara County. This week is Spring Break, with faculty and students not attending. This keeps the campus population to a minimum as the population will be made up of staff and administrators.

Two weeks ago, college administrators, faculty and staff began planning for alternate instruction methods in anticipation of this event. Tomorrow (March 16), college administrators will be joined by student, faculty and staff leaders to finalize plans for the coming weeks.  

We remain committed to following the guidance of federal, state and county health agencies as our primary means of protecting the health of our students, faculty and staff.  Last week, following the announcement of K-12 closures, the college shared with staff that necessity leaves for child care, family care, or self-care will be approved.

The college is following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which instructs the college to work with the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (SBCPHD) on decisions regarding cancelling classes."

  • Multiple college events will be canceled through the end of March.
  • All athletic practices outside of regularly scheduled classes are postponed indefinitely.
  • All competition for spring sports and all nontraditional sports seasons are postponed indefinitely.
