Viticulture or Enology:

As a graduate with a degree in viticulture or enology, many opportunities and career choices are available to you. In the winery, jobs include:

  • Winemaker
  • Wine analysis lab technicians
  • Microbiologist

  • Quality control and assurance supervisor

In the vineyard, jobs include:

  • Vineyard manager
  • Pest control advisor
  • Crew supervisor

  • Research viticulturist

According to the California Employment Development Department, Enologists belong in the broad occupational group of Industrial Production Managers. Employees in this occupational group earn a median wage of $42.29 per hour in Santa Barbara County, California. Entry-level positions may earn less than this figure while well-qualified individuals with ample experience may exceed $9,000 a month in the larger wineries.

 Wine Marketing and Sales:

With an A.S. degree/certificate in Wine Marketing & Sales, you will be prepared for immediate employment in wine sales in positions such as: 

  • Wine wholesaler
  • Wine retailer
  • Wine broker
  • Tasting room and restaurant sales
  • Wine label design
  • Regulatory compliance expert

There are many levels of wine sales ranging from the large distributorship to a small tasting room, and from a fine restaurant to a wine shop. Both older and new wineries require brand establishment and brand management that marketing and promotion personnel provide. As an example, sales representatives in wholesale and manufacturing related occupations (including wine sales) earn a median wage of $24.68 per hour or $51,330 annually according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with Agricultural Applications

With a certificate of completion in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with Agricultural Applications, employment opportunities in the wine grape industry as well as any other agribusiness enterprise become available. You may become employed as a viticulturist, a vineyard manager or as a GIS consultant for any agricultural operation. Career options with a background in GIS include:

  • GIS Analyst
  • GIS Technician
  • GIS Data Specialist
  • GIS Specialist
  • GIS Mapping Technician
  • Engineering Technician
  • GIS Mapping Assistant
  • GIS Application Specialist
  • Engineering Aide

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Geographic Information Systems Technicians earn a median wage of $36.13 hourly or $75,150 annually.

Pairing Wine and Food:

With a certificate in pairing wine and food, you will be prepared to seek immediate employment in wine and food related careers such as wine sales and marketing, as well as winery tasting rooms. If your interest lies in working for dining establishments, you will find a direct benefit from taking these classes.

As an example, food service managers can expect to earn a median wage of $24.42 per hour or $50,790 annually according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
