Roy R. Local dancer discovers discipline at Hancock I began studying dance with the Allan Hancock Youth Dance Program and discovered jazz, modern, and ballet. Later, I studied in the adult dance program at the college, becoming more diverse and dedicated to different styles of movement. Since graduating from Hancock, I’ve studied with the Joffrey Ballet in New York, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, the San Francisco Ballet, and have been working professionally as a performer, choreographer, and teacher. Most recently I worked with producers from the Montreal, Canada Cirque de Soleil in a Hawaiian production. Having recently relocated to Portland, Oregon, I am currently teaching and working on theatrical/dance productions. Hancock is where I learned discipline which has proved critical for motivation and progress as I’ve continued working in the field of dance.

Courtney M. A college graduate and NFL cheerleader Growing up I studied tap, ballet, jazz, pointe, lyrical, modern, and hip hop. After graduating from Righetti High School in 2003, I came to the college to earn an AA and broaden my dance training. I was very involved in the dance program, taking technique classes and performing in numerous concerts. I was honored to be awarded the Santa Maria Arts Council Scholarship in 2004 as well as the Ruth Malvarose dance scholarship in 2005. After graduating from Hancock I got my BA in history from UCSB. In 2008 I realized a life-long goal: I auditioned for and earned a spot on the NFL's Seattle Seahawk Sea Gals cheerleading team. Not only do we get to perform in front of 70,000-plus fans at each game but we also have the opportunity to be involved in numerous philanthropic activities throughout Seattle and the state of Washington. I learned so much in my two years at Hancock before continuing my education at UCSB and still to this day find that I use many of the skills that were developed while I studied at the college’s dance program.

Bill L. Miltary man to professional ballet dancer I grew up in Sacramento, California, and was involved in theatre since the age of seven. I began studying dance at 17. After serving in Vietnam and Thailand, I was finishing my last year in the military at Vandenberg AFB when I stopped by the dance program at the college one day. I met with Agnes Grogan who helped me to arrange a schedule allowing me to take classes and both perform and choreograph in the dance concert. While studying at the college’s dance program, I learned to work under difficult conditions, made new friends, and got in shape so as to re-enter the dance world. I have been fortunate to have traveled and performed all over the world and was a principal dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet of Canada and Le Ballet De Grand Theatre de Geneva in Switzerland, each for 10 years as well as a member of the Joffrey Ballet. Since then I have continued working a choreographer and guest teacher in Europe and China.

Johanna M. future marine scientist AHC was a great starting point for me, I was able to explore all my different interests, meet new friends and go on exciting adventures. The lessons I learned at AHC have spurred me on, and I now attend University of Hawaii: Hilo, and am working even further towards my goal of being a Marine Scientist. My college now is not known for it's chemistry or math departments and I was able to complete these required classes with excellent teachers such as O'Neil instead of struggling through it at another larger university where there is not as much personal interaction with teachers. I recommend AHC to any student! By completeing generel ED and prereqs at a Junior college one can save money! I will always smile on my thoughts of the experiances I had at Hancock, and I hope others can too!

Tracy T. Nine months to a new career I graduated from Allan Hancock College in 2004 from the dental assisting program. I knew some people who had finished it and they were really happy with their jobs and their careers so I decided to give it a try and I ended up really liking it. Allan Hancock College gave me a great opportunity to have a career because I felt so prepared and I got hired right away when I finished the program. It was a nine month program and it was well worth it. What I liked about Allan Hancock is you are trained in the field you’re going to go into- so they teach everything you’re going to know. My overall experience at Hancock was awesome.

Ryan S. from Cal Poly, to Hancock, to Cal Poly I started as a freshman at Cal Poly and then transferred here. Hancock has made things a lot easier for me. It’s much, much cheaper than Cal Poly and you get just as good of an education. We use the same textbooks as Cal Poly and there are a lot of similarities between classes here and those at a four-year university. I was a math major at Cal Poly, but I didn’t want to be stuck in an office doing math all day. Instead I decided to study engineering, and once I decided that I want to become a civil engineer, I talked to my counselor at the University Transfer Center and she showed me all the classes I’d need to take. After I leave Hancock I plan to transfer back to Cal Poly as a civil engineering major. I’m glad I came to Hancock. For one, there’s all the money I saved. That’s important to me because I’m paying for my own education. I also think that Hancock prepares you really well for what’s to come. There’re definitely a lot of resources on campus and if you need help you can get it here. Hancock was the right choice for me.

Vicky G. from full-time Mom to cellular biologist I went through a traumatic divorce and decided to use that as a catalyst to bring about positive change in my life. After my youngest son graduated from high school I enrolled at Hancock with the intent to complete a degree in cellular biology. My experience at Hancock has been phenomenal and I am happy to say that I will attend Cal Poly in the fall. In the meantime, I have participated in two prestigious scientific internships at UCSB and most recently Brookhaven National Lab. Hancock made it all possible for me.

Jackie J. Reentry student/Cal Poly transfer “I was 46 years old and a grandmother of two when I transferred to Cal Poly. I would never have done it without the preparation I received at Allan Hancock College. A car accident left me quadriplegic, and stopped my college career. Fifteen years later I took a chance and enrolled at Hancock. My experience was wonderful…the counselors spent extra time with me, and when it came time, personally assisted with my application to Poly.”
