Hancock Youth Dancers Present "Pinocchio" in a Magical Moments Production

The classic tale to be told through a variety of music and different forms of dance

Apr. 11, 2017 -- Allan Hancock College youth dancers will tell the beloved story of the real-boy-wannabe Pinocchio through music and dance as they present Magical Moments and Spring Recital on April 29 and 30 at Santa Maria High School’s Ethel Pope Auditorium.

“This year’s performance is going to be energetic, fun, and inspiring!” said Courtney Grimnes, youth dance director for Allan Hancock College Community Education’s College for Kids program. “We won’t be using music from Disney’s Pinocchio, but instead we will be telling the story through a variety of familiar music and different forms of dance including jazz, hip hop, and ballet.”

Magical Moments’ reinvention of the story also includes a more feminine take on some of the classic characters with the role of Geppetto becoming “Geppetta”, performed by Madison Grimnes, a sophomore from Righetti High School and Stromboli becoming “Strombella,” performed by Sarah Yamaichi, a sophomore from St. Joseph High School.

Other featured dancers include the lead role Pinocchio performed by Valerie Jimenez, an eighth-grader from Tommy Kuntz Junior High; Jiminy Cricket performed by Honor Fischer, a senior from Orcutt Academy; and Figaro the cat performed by Ralph Dunlap kindergartener, Presley Wright.

The Magical Moments show will be combined with the annual Spring Recital and showcase a total of 35 dancers ages 5 to 18. Included in the Spring Recital showcase will be a contemporary number choreographed by Orcutt Academy senior Adriana Baca, her first ever choreography performed on stage.

“My favorite part about this show is that we bring together students of all ages from different schools throughout the entire community,” said Grimnes. “The performers have so much talent and fun and we really think the audience will enjoy it. I hope it sparks an interest in dancing for more young people.”

Show times for “Pinocchio” will be Saturday, April 29, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m. at Santa Maria High School’s Ethel Pope Auditorium, 901 S. Broadway, in Santa Maria.

Tickets prices are $8 for adults; $5 for children and can be purchased through April 27 at the Allan Hancock College Community Education (bldg. S), Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Fridays between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., or at the door.
