Allan Hancock College Singers to Perform Classic Show Tunes and Broadway Hits During Spring Concert on May 11

Apr. 10, 2017 --Everyone in the Allan Hancock College Singers will be ready for their close ups in May, as the spring concert program celebrates hit songs from Hollywood movies and Broadway musicals.

The Hancock choir, which counts major choral works of the classical repertoire, gospel music of the African American canon, and fearless premieres of new music in its musical vocabulary, absolutely shines in the pop world as well.

“This group is a natural show choir—I knew they could sing like crazy, but they’ve also got moves I didn’t know they possessed!” said Ann Lucas, D.M.A., Hancock music instructor and choir director.

The choir will step into the spotlight for its spring concert called “Movies and More” on Thursday, May 11, at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Maria. The First United Methodist Church is located at 311 S. Broadway in Santa Maria.  All tickets are $8 and there is no reserved seating. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts office on the college’s Santa Maria campus, or at the door.

Soloists taken from the choir will be featured in quite a few of the selections, including Fats Waller’s Aint’ Misbehavin'; and a medley from the movie O Brother Where Art Thou, among others. The scope of movie tunes ranges from Cole Porter’s madcap comedies in the 1930s to songs from contemporary films such as Cold Mountain and The Hunger Games. The spring concert will conclude with a raucous version of “You’re the One That I Want” from everybody’s favorite, Grease

For more information about the concert, call the fine arts department at (805) 922-6966 ext. 3252 or 3412.
