Incoming Freshmen Invited to Discover STEM Education at Hancock

The event is free for first-year students

STEM Week of Discovery

JULY 28, 2017--Recent high school graduates are invited to participate in Allan Hancock College’s STEM Week of Discovery from August 14-17. The event is completely free for students. This four-day program will introduce incoming freshmen to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education at Hancock through a series of hands-on activities related to the majors.

“Our main goal is to give students exposure to the world of STEM while also making them aware of the services to help them be successful college students,” said Emmanuel Guerrero, STEM instructional advisor. “We want to ensure their transition to a four-year university is smooth.”

The week begins with an information session for parents to guide them in supporting their student’s academic journey. New students will have the opportunity to meet their instructors and listen to faculty presentations. The event concludes with a field trip and tour of the pump stations at the local Phillips 66 refinery. Phillips 66 is sponsoring the STEM Week of Discovery.

“We want students who participate in the STEM Week of Discovery to begin their first semester at Hancock with confidence,” said STEM Counselor Angelica Elloqui. “This experience will help them connect to a strong network of peers, faculty and staff who can provide academic resources and encouragement throughout their educational experience.”

Students who participate and complete the four-day program will receive a $200 book voucher for the Allan Hancock College Bookstore.

To register or view more information, visit, or call the STEM Center at 1-805-922-6966 ext. 3557.
