Hancock Hello Welcomes 500 First-Year Students

Campus tours, workshops and counseling services among activities offered at the new student orientation

AUGUST 17, 2017--The sound of students filled the Santa Maria campus once again as Allan Hancock College welcomed more than 500 incoming freshmen at Hancock Hello, the college’s second annual new student orientation event.

Students took advantage of campus tours, financial aid workshops and counseling services. More than 200 freshmen obtained their student ID cards and attended a University Transfer Center (UTC) workshop.

“It eases the tension for incoming freshmen,” said Raquel Orozco, Hancock counseling outreach and retention specialist. “We’ve based the events at Hancock Hello on feedback from high school students and their concerns. We’re trying to anticipate and address new students’ needs.”

A few Hancock students welcomed administration of justice major Elijah Vega next to one of the booths. “I want to get a head start on my major, and I’m really looking forward to the college experience,” said Vega. “I think Hancock Hello is a good way to start.”

Sociology major Sabrina Ornelas felt excited to learn more about her new school. “It’s a good opportunity to make connections, meet the faculty and it brings the community together,” said Ornelas. “I think the campus tours are a good idea. A lot of students are intimidated because this is a lot bigger than high school.”

Students were also introduced to the various campus clubs including Student Ambassadors, the Anime and Manga Club and Auto Technology Car Club. Hancock’s culinary arts and management department also set up a booth for food science and nutrition.

Biology major Sarah Lopez learned more about the student services and campus activities as well. “It’s nice to see the different clubs that are available,” said Lopez. “I’ll definitely be taking advantage of counseling and financial aid. I also signed up for a few classes I didn’t even know Hancock offered.”

Fall classes begin Monday, August 21. There is still time to register. Visit www.hancockcollege.edu and click Apply & Register.
