Hancock Launches New Era of Learning at Vandenberg Air Force Base

AHC holds classes in the new Base Education Center.

VAFB New Base Ed BldgMARCH 6, 2014 -- Airmen, airwomen and their families, as well as any Central Coast resident, will now take Allan Hancock College courses inside a new, state-of-the-art building at Vandenberg Air Force Base.  A 38,384 square-foot Education Center officially opened to the public in late February.  The Air Force will host an Open House at the center on Tuesday, March 11, from 4-5:30 p.m.  The public is invited to attend.

The new building replaced a 55-year old elementary school campus that served as the base’s education center.  The new facility is in a centralized location adjacent to the enlisted dorms, the main gates and military family housing.  The center includes a 75-seat auditorium, 20 lecture classrooms, conference rooms, library, computer labs and counseling offices.

“The new education center is better in every aspect.  There is better parking, more office space and just all-around better conditions for our students, faculty and guests,” said Rick Rantz, dean of Allan Hancock College’s extended campus.

Hancock’s administrative space is located on the second floor in Room 216 of the new building.  The college has two designated classrooms, plus an overflow room.

Five AHC classes are being offered during the spring semester.  Three of them are eight-week classes that run from the week of March 24 through May 22.  Space is still available in Freshman Composition: Exposition (ENGL 101), General Psychology (PSY 101) and Public Speaking (SPCH 101).

Hancock has been offering classes at Vandenberg AFB since 1952 when the base was called Camp Cooke.

The center is open on Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesday.  The center offers counseling, financial aid and cashiering services.  An additional 160 classes are being offered this spring less than 10 miles away from Vandenberg AFB at Hancock’s Lompoc Valley Center.
