Orientation Recommended for New Summer Students; Required for New Fall Students

Fall students must complete an orientation if they want priority registration.

JUNE 2, 2014 -- All students attending Allan Hancock College for the first time this summer should attend a New Student Orientation (NSO) and an Academic Advising Workshop (AAW).  These events are scheduled at both the Santa Maria campus and Lompoc Valley Center.  Students planning to attend Allan Hancock College in the fall are required to attend both an orientation and workshop in order to quality for new student priority registration.  New fall students will also be required to complete the college’s START assessment.

The orientations will provide necessary information about valuable college services, including counseling, financial aid, health services, job opportunities and more.  Attendees will also learn helpful strategies for time management and study skills.  The advising workshops provide one-on-one counseling assistance to help choose the appropriate classes.

Orientation and workshops are scheduled through June 17; see below.  Sign up online at www.hancockcollege.edu/counseling and click New Students.

“Our goal is to ensure that all students begin college with the information they need to succeed,” said Yvonne Teniente-Cuello, chair of the college’s counseling department.  “We pack a lot of information into these sessions.  Our research tells us that those who participate in an orientation like this have much higher retention rates – meaning they stay the course and achieve their goals.”
