Donation to Hancock From Local Car Club Fuels 10 Scholarships

The Model A Ford Club donated $5,500.

FordCarClubDonationAPRIL 8, 2014 -- Classic car lovers are fueling the passion for the next generation of car enthusiasts at Allan Hancock College.  The Santa Maria Model A Ford Club donated $5,500 to fund scholarships for 10 students in the college’s industrial technology department.

“We are very grateful to receive this scholarship money,” said Eric Mason, chair of the industrial technology department.  “The donation means more to our students than just financial assistance; it also gives them the acknowledgment of the importance of continuing their education and receiving their certificates and degrees.”

The donation will fund seven $500 scholarships for Hancock students majoring in automotive technology or auto body technology.  Three additional $500 scholarships will be awarded to students with a major within the industrial technology department.  The club also provided a $500 grant to the department for educational materials.

The Santa Maria Model A Ford Club started in 2003 and includes nearly 50 families.  The club raised the money during its annual car show last fall.  “We have never raised this much money in the 11 years we have fundraised for the college,” said Jay McCord, co-chairman of the car show.  “Many of our club members, including me, graduated from automotive programs offered at community colleges.  So it feels great to support such an amazing cause and give back.”

The Santa Maria Model A Ford Club and Hancock’s automotive programs have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship over the years.  Model A Ford Club members entered their vintage cars last month in the Hancock Auto Club’s Car Show.  The Model A Ford Club also allowed the college to promote its industrial technology department during its 11th annual Car Show.

The 10 scholarships will be awarded during the college’s scholarship banquet on Thursday, May 22.
