Youth Dancers Present Magical Moments & Spring Recital

Performances are April 26 and 27.

MagicalMomentsDancerAPRIL 7, 2014 -- Allan Hancock College youth dancers will present A Mermaid’s Tale and their spring recital as part of the annual Magical Moments dance event.  Performance dates are Saturday, April 26, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 27, at 2 p.m., at Santa Maria High School’s Ethel Pope Auditorium.

Under the direction and choreography of Courtney Grimnes, A Mermaid’s Tale features several students who are enrolled in the College for Kids (CFK) Youth Dance Company class.  This class is a performing group of advance level dancers ages 12-18 who are selected by audition.

Lyrric Burgos, a senior at Pioneer Valley High School, dances the lead of the Youngest Mermaid who wants to explore the world above the ocean.  Righetti High School senior Madison Yolar-Groppetti dances the part of the evil Sea Witch who wants to rule the sea kingdom, and Rebecca Aldrich, also a senior at Righetti, plays the role of the Sea Creature who is sent by the Youngest Mermaid’s father to watch over her.

“This is a story of adventure, of growing up and about love.”  Grimnes states.  “A Mermaid’s Tale is a fantastic story the whole family can come and enjoy together.”

Choreographer Courtney Grimnes is a long-time instructor and choreographer of youth dance events and also performs with the college’s adult dance program.

The three lead dancers have performed in past productions of The Nutcracker withBurgos as the Arabian dancer, Yolar-Groppetti as the Spanish dancer, and Aldrich as the Sugar Plum Fairy.  The cast also includes dancers from the Santa Maria Valley, as well as dancers who are currently enrolled in CFK ballet, hip-hop and jazz dance classes offered through Allan Hancock College Community Education.

The annual spring recital is part of the Magical Moments production this year and showcases CFK students ages 4 to 18 performing various dance styles learned throughout the school year.

Tickets for the performances can be purchased at the door.  Ticket prices are $8 for adults; $5 for children/seniors/students.
