Hancock Track Now Open

Members of the public may use it during posted hours.

New TrackNOVEMBER 25, 2013 -- The wait is over.  The new state-of-the-art track and field complex at Allan Hancock College is now open.  Students, athletes and members of the public can now enjoy its amenities for both intercollegiate competition and personal fitness.

“We are thrilled to open our new field of dreams to the public.  Our facility fills a large need in the community,” said Kim Ensing, associate dean of kinesiology, recreation and athletics.

Members of the public may use the track for jogging or walking. It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to dusk.  Saturday hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The track is closed to the public on Sundays and college holidays.

Funding for the track was made possible through Bond Measure I, which voters passed in 2006 to support facility improvements and technology.  The track construction was also supported with funding from the City of Santa Maria.

Ensing is asking all who access the track to help ensure its long life by abiding by the rules for use.  The use of bicycles, strollers, skates, motor vehicles and any other equipment that may damage the track and fields is prohibited.  Community members are asked to wear tennis and running shoes only, no cleats will be allowed on the track or field.

“We all need to work together to keep the track in great shape so the community will be able to enjoy it for generations to come,” Ensing said.  “We are also looking forward to officially commemorating the opening of the track on Jan. 25 with a special ceremony and field day.”

All organized events and activities proposed on the track or field must be pre-approved through Allan Hancock College’s Student Activities office.  For more information call (805) 922-6966 ext. 3229.
