Hancock Jazz Ensemble to Perform Dec. 8

Concert will feature Bob Osborn on alto sax.

NOVEMBER 20, 2013 -- The Allan Hancock College Jazz Ensemble will present its annual fall concert on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Unity Chapel of Light in Orcutt.

Under the direction of Chuck Osborne, the 22-member big band includes piano, bass, guitar, drums, trumpets, trombones and saxophones.  The band encompasses musicians ranging in age from teens to “seasoned adults.”

The evening will feature Bob Osborn on alto saxophone performing “Georgia On My Mind,” as well as many of the following numbers:

  • “The Opener (160)” – alto sax solo
  • “Blue for D (112)” – guitar, alto, tenor, baritone, piano
  • “Old Devil Moon (160)” – trumpet solo
  • “Act Your Age (128)” – alto, trumpet, piano
  • “Satin Doll (126)” – piano, trumpet, tenor
  • “Blug Blueser (132)” – piano, tenor, alto
  • “Moon River (116)” – trumpet solo
  • “The Defibrillator (116)” – tenor, trombone, trumpet
  • “Autumn Leaves (144)” – piano solo
  • “Splendid (132)” – trumpet, baritone sax, drums

Osborne has been the jazz ensemble director joining the college’s fine arts department in 2000.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from San Francisco State University, and a master’s degree in education from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  Previously, he was the band director at Arroyo Grande and Righetti high schools.

The Allan Hancock College Jazz Band performs two major concerts each academic year, one each in the fall and spring. 

Admission is free; donations are accepted and are used to purchase new music and equipment for the band.  The church is located at 1165 Stubblefield Road in Orcutt.
