Concert Band to Present Benefit Concert March 17

at the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande

MARCH 8, 2013 -- The Allan Hancock College Concert Band will present its annual benefit concert for San Luis Obispo County’s South County Education Foundation on Sunday, March 17, at 3 p.m., at the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande. 

The benefit concert will feature soloist Leroy Irwin on the alto saxophone performing “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” made popular by Elvis Presley in the movie Blue Hawaii.  The tune was written by George David Weiss, Hugo E. Peretti, and Luigi Creatore.  The version Irwin will perform was arranged by James Swearingen. 

Conductor Emeritus Gary Thompson will also be featured as he leads the band in several movements of Alfred Reed’s “First Suite.” 

Other numbers will include:

  • “Procession of the Nobles” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
  • “Them Basses” by G. H. Huffine
  • “Fantasy Adventure at the Movies,” arranged by Michael Browne
  • “Selections from Chicago,” arranged by Ted Ricketts

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, several Irish works will also be performed including:

  • “An Irish Rhapsody,” by Clare Grundman
  • “The Rakes of Mallow” (from the “Irish Suite”), by Leroy Anderson
  • “Celtic Voyage,” by Melanie Donahue
  • “Irish Tune from County Derry,” by Percy Grainger

Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 for students, AHC faculty and staff and seniors.  Tickets are available from the Clark Center Box Office (phone: 489-9444), from any band member, and at the door, space permitting.

The Clark Center for the Performing Arts is located at 487 Fair Oaks Avenue on the Arroyo Grande High School Campus.

Other upcoming spring performances include Band-a-Rama, where the college’s Concert Band will perform separately and together with many area middle- and high-school bands.  This popular event will take place April 13 in the Joe White Memorial Gymnasium located inside the Allan Hancock College Santa Maria campus Sports Pavilion (bldg. N).  The Concert Band will conclude its spring season with a performance May 11 at the First Baptist Church in Santa Maria.
