Men's Basketball Team is in State Playoffs; Five Players Named All Conference

First playoff game is March 1.

FEBRUARY 26, 2013 -- The Allan Hancock College men’s basketball team has earned a spot in the state playoffs for the third season in a row.  The Bulldogs are seeded 11th in the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs and will play sixth seed College of the Canyons on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in Santa Clarita, Calif.

The Bulldogs finished 20-9 overall and ranked third in the Western State Conference North Division.  The Cougars were 20-8 and finished first in the Western State Conference South Division.

“This is a good matchup for us,” said Hancock head coach Ralph Gorton.  “We play well on the road, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity to play in the playoffs once again.”

The Bulldogs had five players named All-Conference this season, more than any other team in the Western State Conference North Division.  Demetrius Thomas, Khufu Najee, and Devonne Nolan were named first team, and Josh Varney and Leron Fisher received honorable mention.

“For the second year in a row, despite not winning the league title, Allan Hancock College placed three athletes on the first team and two with honorable mention,” Gorton said.

Thomas was nominated for All-State and All-American honors.  He led the conference in scoring with 26 points and 12 rebounds per game.  Najee averaged 21 points a game and seven rebounds.

According to Kim Ensing, associate dean, kinesiology, recreation and athletics, if the Bulldogs play to the best of their abilities, the team is more than ready to travel to Santa Clarita and beyond.

“Our men’s basketball team has shown signs of being state championship contenders,” she said.

The winner of Friday’s game will advance to play March 6 against the winner of a matchup between third seed Mt. San Antonio and either 14th seed Antelope Valley or 19th seed Cerritos.

Tickets to the CCCA state tournament are available only at the door and are $8 for general admission and $5 for students, seniors, and children ages 12 and under.  For more information, call the athletic department at 922-6966 ext. 3227.
