After two successful seasons at Allan Hancock College, running back Cameron Artis-Payne has declared his commitment to play football for the Auburn University Tigers next season.

“I’ve always wanted to play in the Southeastern Conference, and I’ve achieved that,” Artis-Payne said.  “It’s a dream come true for me.”

The Harrisburg, Penn. native (shown above in action against El Camino Sept. 8, 2012) joined the Bulldogs as a freshman and found a home on a team that values a strong running back.  In 2011, he ran for 1,364 yards and scored 18 touchdowns.  He was named All-California First Team Offense in Region IV by the California Community College Football Coaches Association.

This season, Artis-Payne has rushed for 1,838 yards with one game left to go in the regular season.  He is the state leader in rushing yards per game (204) and touchdowns (23), and a five-time Southern California Football Association Northern Conference Player of the Week.  Artis-Payne has broken four school records for rushing yards and touchdowns scored.

“Cameron is a self-made man,” said Hancock head coach Kris Dutra.  “Through hard work, he made this happen for himself, and I’m very proud of him.”

Artis-Payne came to Santa Maria because he felt that he could excel in Hancock’s offense.  He was right.

“Coach Dutra has helped me a lot in the last two years, and I want to tell him thank you,” Artis-Payne said.

He is leaving the Central Coast to play for a school with a long history, in a conference known for tough competition.  The Tigers were the 2010 National Champions and have produced three Heisman Trophy winners.

“I chose Auburn because of the history of the school and because they put out a lot of great running backs,” Artis-Payne said.  “I’m really excited about starting my Division I career.”

Artis-Payne is a Bulldog for at least one more game as the team goes up against College of the Canyons on the road on Saturday, Nov. 10.  The game will be broadcast live on the Hancock athletics website at www.athletics.hancockcollege.edu.
