Welcome to Distance Learning--General
Information
What is Distance Learning?
Distance learning classes at Allan Hancock College offer
the opportunity to earn college credits through self-paced
learning with maximum flexibility. Some distance learning
classes require no on-site activities while others require
limited on-site attendance, typically orientation, midterms
and finals. Check the information provided in the orientation
sections of the distance learning pages next to your class(es)
of choice for full details.
How do I sign up?
All students enrolling in distance learning courses may use
online or in-person registration. Once WebReg ends for any
semester or term, Distance Learning students may also utilize
fax registration if in-person registration is not convenient.
Please see the Distance Learning pages of the current schedule
of classes for complete registration instructions. All fees
listed in the Credit Classes section of the Schedule of Classes
are applicable to distance learning classes. Students enrolled
in live video link classes based in Santa Maria must also
pay Student Center Fee.
Register early! Many classes are filled well in advance of
the registration deadline. Check the registration deadline
in the Schedule of Classes.
How do I know what I am supposed to be doing?
After registering, students enrolled in distance learning
courses usually attend an orientation session where they will
receive information regarding course requirements, examination
schedules, instructor conferences, and review sessions. The
dates and locations of orientation sessions are listed by
each course. If a student registers after the orientation
session, he or she must contact the instructor immediately.
Faculty phone numbers and email address should be listed in
the People Directory on AHC's home page.
Are online classes just like regular on-campus courses?
It is important to remember that online courses are equivalent
to the classroom-based version in course content, textbooks,
required assignments and study time. The main difference is
in the delivery method. Students who successfully complete
online learning courses tend to agree that those classes were
similar in workload to classroom-based courses. Distance learning
classes place more responsibility on the student to be self-disciplined
and to apply solid independent study skills. Find
