The Fire Technology/Fire Academy and Wildland Fire Technology programs are responsible for fire service training in three college districts and
two counties. Our courses are taught from Paso Robles to Carpinteria. These courses
are for pre-service and in-service students.
The Fire Technology degree/certificate program is designed to prepare you for a career
in the fire service, either public or private, upgrade your skills as an in-service
fire professional in your present position or prepare you for promotional opportunities.
Courses focus on demonstrating safety and efficiency in emergency and fire situations,
analyzing the causes of fires and how to fight them, applicable laws, regulations
and codes, building construction types and conditions associated with structural collapse
and firefighter safety, and understanding fire detection and suppression systems.
Fire service history, culture and diversity are also covered to educate you in all
aspects of the firefighter career path.
Acceptance into the Fire Academy is by an application process. Fall applications are available during the month of March and Spring applications
are available during October. Prospective cadets are evaluated on the basis of their
college and fire experience. The top people are offered enrollment in the class.
Allan Hancock College is an Accredited Regional Training Program and the Fire Academy
is part of the California State Fire Marshal’s accreditation. Since 1972 we have taught
Firefighter-1 classes through our 609-hour certified Fire Academy program.
The Firefighter 1 Academy is a California State Fire Marshal certified academy that
meets all the requirements in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 for
entry level firefighters. Our academy is the foundation for a career in the fire service.
The Certification Training Standards for Firefighter 1 are followed and signed off
as you complete each block of instruction. Certification exams require a passing score
of at least 80 percent and manipulative exams require a score of 100 percent.

"Without a doubt the best part about Hancock College is the relationships you build with a group of like-minded individuals, and growing with that group. I enjoy the positive training environment that is created by the cadre and their efforts to help the cadets. They make the experience inside and outside the classroom fun. I would recommend Allan Hancock College to anyone interested in networking with a wealth of cadets and cadre who know what it takes to do the job. The knowledge you can open yourself up to will put you ahead of the game during your search for a career."
