The Medical Assisting program offers two options to provide students with preparation
for work in a medical office. Classes are offered toward certification in the following
- Option #1 - Medical Assisting Certification (Day Program) - Fall Start

Both the medical assisting certificate and the medical billing and coding certificate
are two semester programs. Both the medical assisting program and the medical billing program start in the fall semester. The medical assisting certificate is a full-time program held during the day, while
the medical billing and coding certificate consists of individual courses held in
the evening. Class sizes are small with 35 students accepted per class each year. To
be admitted to the program, you must obtain the official application forms online
or from the health sciences office in building M and follow the outlined procedures
Allan Hancock College now offers certification examinations through the National Health Career Association for both medical assisting and medical coding and billing.
Option #1 - Medical Assisting
Upon admittance to the medical assisting program, your coursework will prepare you
for both front and back office skills required for employment as a medical assistant
in a doctor’s office or medical facility. You will be trained in maintaining medical
records and interpreting medical terms used in medical records. You will be able to
prepare income statements, work with financial accounting processes and systems and
use standard medical office computer software. Coursework takes place in both the
classroom and lab setting to enable you to develop proficiency in maintaining and
using aseptic techniques, administering specified medications under the direction
of a physician, performing various laboratory tests, and assisting the physician with

by the California Certifying Board for Medical Assistants.
Option #2 - Medical Billing and Coding
If medical billing and coding is your emphasis, you will focus on developing foundational
skills in the medical billing process, handling insurance forms and coding, completing
end-of-month operations in a medical office, accurately coding procedures and diagnoses,
and composing legal collection letters as part of collection procedures and practices.
