Family & Consumer Sciences
Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) encompasses the study of relationships among people
and their personal environments, focusing on the impact of the physical, biological,
and social environments on human behavior and development. If you have an interest
in a career that involves serving consumers and families in developing living skills,
food and nutrition habits, or managing living and working challenges, then a degree
in family and consumer sciences is an excellent choice for educational advancement.
The general FCS curriculum prepares you for employment in businesses; agencies serving
families; for transfer to FCS teacher education and career pathway programs at a university;
and for productive family living and wise consumer decisions.
Upon graduation you will be qualified to apply nutrition science and culinary techniques
that improve health and promote longevity, assist individuals and families in directing
their short and long-term financial plans, design and implement life management strategies
that improve individuals and families’ quality of life, and give direction on apparel
selection using fashion principles and knowledge of textile characteristics and personal
FCS Education Transfer Emphasis:
If teaching is your passion, the family and consumer sciences education option will
prepare you in transferring to a university and achieving the California secondary
teaching credential. Our curriculum provides a comprehensive background to teach in
Home Economic Careers and Technology (HECT) departments in California high schools.
Instructional assistantships/internships are available in the local high schools to
gauge the student’s affinity for a future in teaching. There are additional courses
available as electives in each subject area to provide an area of specialization for
future teachers. The goal is to develop competence in the eight career path subject
areas relevant to teaching Family and Consumer Sciences.
Fashion or Interior Design Emphasis:
The family and consumer sciences - fashion studies, fashion merchandising and interior
design merchandising degree and certificate options at Allan Hancock College combine
the study of: design and construction, style and body silhouette, clothing fitting,
design principles, and textile characteristics and materials, with the business of
fashion and interior design.
The fashion studies curriculum will prepare you for a career in one of the fastest
growing industries in California. Courses are designed to provide the foundation for
transfer to a four-year institution or technical schools specializing in fashion/costume
design, production, and merchandising.
Fashion involves work with the design, production, and marketing of clothing, whether
with a large manufacturer, a small specialty firm or with a one-person business.
The fashion merchandising curriculum will help you acquire needed skills for immediate
employment in sales and merchandising, and for transfer to technical schools, four-year
programs in fashion merchandising, and executive training programs for major specialty
or chain stores. Our courses also offer general interest education if you simply want
to explore new opportunities or update your job skills.
Interior Design Merchandising
The interior design merchandising curriculum is designed to provide a foundation for
transfer to a four-year institution or technical school specializing in interior design.
Our coursework will help you acquire needed skills for immediate employment as a specialty
store salesperson, design product representative or owner/manager of your own business.
From required coursework to elective classes, you will learn to integrate design principles
and textile characteristics with your personal style to create and present projects
and a portfolio tailored to your chosen career.
