Prerequisite coursework from another college should be verified with the Transcript Evaluator in the Admissions and Records office or the Counseling department prior to registration. If coursework was completed at a private institution or a college not within California, the student must provide a copy of the course description from the catalog of that college in addition to official transcripts.  For an explanation of prerequisites go to Prerequisites, Co-Requisites and Advisories.

The Student Testing Advising, Retention and Transition (START) program includes an assessment of your skills in reading comprehension, sentence skills, and math; an orientation to the college; and advising by academic counselors regarding your course selection.  Assessment is highly encouraged, but not mandatory unless you want to enroll in a course with an English or math prerequisite which you have not met.

Residency Information

California Education Code requires that each student enrolled in or applying for admission to a California community college provide information and evidence as deemed necessary by the Board of Trustees of the Allan Hancock Joint Community College District to determine his/her legal residence classification. Students absent for more than one semester are required to complete a new application for admission to determine residency and applicable fees.

A resident student is one who has been a legal resident in California for more than one year immediately preceding the beginning of the semester in which the student plans to enroll and who demonstrates the intent to remain a permanent California resident.

A non-resident student is one who has not had a legal residence in California for more than one year immediately preceding the beginning of the semester. Such students are required to pay non-resident tuition in addition to enrollment fees until such time as California residency is established. To be reclassified as a resident, you must present documentation confirming that you have lived in the state for at least one year and one day prior to the first day of the semester. These documents should be submitted to the Admissions & Records office.

Exemption to the non-resident tuition exists when documentation is presented for any one of the following:
You attended a California high school, or high school equivalent, for a minimum of three years and earned a California high school diploma, or equivalent (Assembly Bill 540).

AB 540 provides an exemption from nonresident tuition for students who attended a California high school for three or more years and graduated from a California high school or attained the equivalent thereof (GED or Certificate of High School Proficiency).  In the case of a person without lawful immigration status, the student must sign an affidavit with the institution of higher education stating that the student has filed an application to legalize his or her immigration status, or will file an application as soon as he or she is eligible to do so.  The exemption is not available for persons who are absent from California, but who are taking distance education classes from California community colleges.

Students who are exempted from paying the nonresident tuition and are admitted under AB540 do not become residents for eligibility purposes for any state-funded program, such as the Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOG) and the Extended Opportunity and Services Program (EOPS).
