Foreign Languages
Allan Hancock College, through its language arts department, offers students the opportunity to become conversant in a variety of foreign languages. The college’s foreign language program provides instruction in Spanish, French, Italian and American Sign Language. While most classes are offered as traditional onsite classes, as of July 2004, Spanish and Italian are also being offered online. Online classes are offered via the Internet and require little, if any, on campus attendance, providing a convenient way to attend college for students with jobs or other obligation. Although the program emphasizes the four aspects of language learning—speaking, understanding, reading and writing—culture is also an integral component of the classes. A computerized language lab provides students the opportunity to practice their language skills.
