Fall 2010 CNA program is full.
Waitlisted students will be contacted by admission and records by email to your myhancock email. You will have 24 hours to pay for the class. If you are added to the class after August 5th, you will have 1 week to complete the items listed in the packet.
Spring 2011 CNA registration packet are expected to be available online in late October/Early November! Limited print copies will be available in the counseling offices starting November 1.

Allan Hancock College is a California public community college in northern Santa Barbara County serving more than 11,000 credit students each semester.

The demand for health care professionals is high in all areas. This need is projected to increase for at least the next 30 years and has resulted in higher wages and more diverse job opportunities for Nursing Assistants. The following courses provide an opportunity for upward mobility, entrance into the VN Program, and an increase pay. Certificates of completion are awarded for all the Nursing Assistant classes. Wages range from $9-$12/hr for a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Certified Home Health Aides have reported earnings of $12-$16/hr. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are offered for most post-CNA courses. CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA)
Nurs 400 - Certified Nursing Assistant/Acute Care Aide - 12 units This state approved program is the core class of the Nursing Assistant Series and a requirement for entrance into the LVN Program. Certification as a Nursing Assistant is mandatory to work in a long-term care setting, and in most acute care hospitals. The Certified Nursing Assistant is vital in the care of the elderly and the chronically ill and the need for CNAs is projected to increase as the population continues to age. Physical care, communication, and psychosocial concerns are some of the areas covered. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be qualified to take the State Board examination (written and skills) to become a CNA. Offered spring and fall semesters, day and evening hours. It is necessary to obtain a registration authorization packet from the department secretary prior to registration.
CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUs) MAY BE AVAILABLE FOR POST-CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA) COURSES:
Nurs 416 - Certified Home Health Aide (2 weeks) 22 CEUs - 2 units Students must show proof of current CNA status. This course meets the state mandated course for certification as a home health aide (which is required by Home Health Agencies). The student will provide care for home-bound clients with disabilities, or during convalescence. Training in personal care, meal preparation, and assisting with medications are some of the areas covered.
Nurs 418 - Restorative Aide (5 weeks, 40 hours) 30 CEUs - 2 units Must show proof of current CNA status. Prepares the student to work under the direction of a licensed physical therapist or occupational therapist and with the licensed nursing staff to assist patients with exercise to improve or maintain mobility and independence in the patient. CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUs) FOR CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANTS
Nurs 422 - EKG/Monitor Observer - 1.5 units Must show proof of current CNA , LVN or RN status. Students will receive training as monitor observers in areas such as critical care and emergency dept., where patients receive cardiac monitoring. The student will be able to recognize normal electrical patterns of the heart, and recognize life-threatening abnormal rhythms. Use of the cardiac monitor as a diagnostic and monitoring tool will be covered. Offered: Summer Session.
NURS 479 - Mentor Training 8 CEUs - 0.5 units Open to health care providers who are interested in a position of training or mentoring new employees. Leadership, communication, stress management, adult teaching strategies, and evaluation methods will be covered. Offered: fall and spring semester. |
