An introduction to effective communication skills and tech

309 Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) (1)
Eight hours weekly (two weeks).
Presents basic and advanced prehospital concepts and skills
including rapid assessment of the critical trauma, patient,
treatment for shock and hypoexmia and rapid transport.
PHTLS certification and 16 hours of CEUs for Emergency
Medical Technicians - 1, paramedics, and registered nurses.

318 Management of the Assaultive Patient (2)
Four hours weekly (eight weeks). Prerequisite: Emergency
Medical Services 307.
Prepares pre-hospital EMS personnel to manage difficult peo
ple and verbally and physically assaultive patients. CEUs for

Emergency Medical Response to Hazardous
Material Incidents (2)
Eight hours weekly (two weeks).
This course meets the requirements for the State of California
CSTI hazardous materials First Responder - Awareness certi
fication and the NFPA 473 standards for a Level-1 EMS re
sponder to hazardous material incidents. Course can be used

321 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (1)
Eight hours weekly (two weeks).
Presents advanced cardiac life support care. Includes Ameri
can Heart Association ACLS certification and sixteen hours for
CEUs for Emergency Medical Technicialns-1, paramedics,

Eight hours weekly (two weeks).
Covers pediatric advanced cardiac life support care. Includes
American Hart Association PALS certification and sixteen

An introduction to safe and effective wilderness travel for rec
reational backpackers as well as emergency response per
sonnel responding to rescue situations in remote/wilderness

333 Paramedic Theory (10)
Twelve hours lecture, twelve hours lab weekly. Prerequisite:
Current California EMT-1 (Basic) certification. Emergency
Medical Services 303 plus a minimum of six months verified
experience as an EMT-1 (Basic) responding to emergency
medical responses within the past two years or Emergency
Medical Services 302.
Advanced life support training in the emergency medical ser
vices career structure covering all techniques of anatomy and
physiology. Includes cardiovascular, respiratory, pediatric,
OB/GYN, and traumatic emergency training. This course
meets 320 hours of the 1032 hours required to complete
paramedic training in the state of California. Course content is
based on the guidelines and authority of the Title 22, Division
9, of the California Code of regulations and the U.S. Depart
ment of Transportation Emergency Medial Technician-Basic

and Techniques (2)
Four hours lecture, four hours lab weekly (seven weeks).
A study of the basic skills required to perform safe and effec
tive aircraft search techniques during a search and rescue
operations in a wilderness or remote location. Sixteen hours of
CEUs for emergency medical technicians-1 and paramedics

338 Wilderness EMS-Land Navigation (1.5)
Eight hours weekly (three weeks) and four hours by arrange
ment.
Presents land navigation skills for the recreational backpacker
as well as emergency response personnel required to re
spond to remote/wilderness area rescue situations. Emphasis
is put on topographic map interpretation, compass and map

343 Paramedic Clinic Laboratory (4)
Twenty-four hours lab weekly (eight weeks). Prerequisite:
Emergency Medical Services 333 and current CPR certifica
tion for health care provider or professional rescurer.
The second phase of paramedic training designed to provide
supervised clinical application of cognitive knowledge and
skills in acute patient care areas. Opportunities for increasing
depth of skill performance and presentation of more advanced
